- THE CONTEXT
Smart metering is a technology that allows distribution grid operators (DGO) – like Eandis and Infrax – to measure gas and electricity consumption on a close to real-time basis.
- CUSTOMER BENEFITS
Next to the benefits of grid balancing and more cost-effective data collection, the smart meter technology is designed to stimulate households to reduce their energy consumption. By doing so, they contribute to the goal of reducing energy consumption by 20% by the year 2020. However, first studies in Belgium failed to demonstrate a link between the availability of consumption data and the reduction of energy consumption. Trilations was asked to provide the Flemish DGOs and the government with the right insights to make the best decision regarding the roll-out of smart metering in Flanders.
- DECISIONS DELIVERED
Using a combination of our utilities industry knowledge, advanced analytic skills and project management competences, we conducted a project in close co-operation with the Flemish DGOs to measure the sustainable impact of smart metering technology on household consumption. As part of this project, TRILATIONS designed and implemented a data collection and feedback mechanism to provide the households with monthly personalized updates regarding their energy consumption. This feedback was based on a segmentation of the households (developed by TRILATIONS) and included household consumption facts as well as consumption comparisons with peer households in their region and a tailored guide on how to reduce energy consumption. We were able to prove that smart metering technology can significantly reduce household energy consumption in a sustainable way, if the right communication is also provided.
The results were based on a population of 2,200 households using electricity and gas over a period of more than 2 years.
