Challenges Grid Operator

Trilations has formed a Utilities Competence Center. The white paper on "Business Context and challenges" was elaborated by our Utilities Competence Center, and the knowledge and ideas we have grouped in this Center.

The white paper focuses on the changing environment in which today’s grid operators will have to function in general and more specific in Belgium:

• Evolution to a smart grid i.e. from a passive, one-way network designed for the pure distribution of a commodity (electricity and gas) to an active, multipoint network including advanced digital technologies enabling active communication (both human and “machine-to-machine”)
• Growing pressure on all energy markets from a CO2 driven 20/20/20 target setting
• From a centralized power generation model to a decentralized model, where active network management helps to create and maintain an alignment between supply and demand
• (eventual) Migration of all market processes towards a new model.

All these factors result in a growing delivery complexity and a rethinking of roles in the new market models. In a world where investment horizons are very long, early planning exercises are absolutely necessary.
